Psychology Word Puzzles: A better way to learn IBDP Psychology

Crosswords are a sound learning activity. A crossword demands cognitive effort and the more cognitive effort applied, the stronger the learning. So completing a psychology crossword is a bazillion times more beneficial than passive reading.

  • Ask this question, “The fundamental ethical requirement is to do no ______?.” And a student will probably give a correct verbal answer. But having the student read the question and then write the word ‘harm’ requires more cognitive effort and so the learning will be more active and therefore stronger.
  • There are Topic and Content specific subjects: Brain and behavior, Scanning techniques, Cultural dimensions etc.
  • There are crosswords focused on the Higher Level Extensions and crosswords focusing on research methods and ethical considerations and there are summary/key vocabulary crosswords for an end of topic summary activity.
  • Each puzzle/page includes supplementary learning material, e.g. a summary/outline of a related key study.
  • These puzzles are effective and engaging for pre-test/pre-exam revision.
  • Copy a few class sets and have crosswords in the classroom ready to use when all else has failed (we all have those days!)
  • Give one crossword to groups of 2-3 students and watch the class competition develop.
  • Just like jigsaw puzzles, few students can leave a crossword incomplete, so expect to be pestered for the answers (which are at the back of the book).
  • Available from amazon.com and amazon.co.uk
